The only villains we get are Kraven, Venom, Sandman, The Lizard, and Mysterio (kind of). They set up The Chameleon and Carnage but they don’t actually do anything. And that’s not even mentioning side characters like Silver Sable who easily could’ve returned in some capacity. Spider-Man 2 doesn’t repeat a single villain from the first game. And I applaud them for trying to use new characters; however, it came at the cost of a cohesive universe.

I had a lot of fun using this before landing a sharp burst of Miles’ Venom lightning onto grouped-up goons, and now Peter can get in on that fun as well. They’re just as enjoyable, as it feels like the suit is trying to burst out of the rumbling DualSense controller in my hands. This aggressive style of play is rewarded, as the only way to heal is by building up your focus bar – filled by landing hits and timing perfect dodges – and is another way to make sure that exciting rhythm of combat is never lost. Overall, there’s slightly less emphasis on stealth encounters this time than in either Spider-Man or Miles Morales. As someone who found the stealth action of the previous games a little simplistic and routine, this new, louder approach is welcome. On the whole it’s a tried and true set-up for a Spider-Man story—the perils of leading a double life, making sacrifices to do the right thing, all that jazz.

In the moody, alternate-universe story Dark Ages, the entire Earth is essentially sent back to the Dark Ages when an EMP knocks out all electricity. In this world, Miles Morales bonds with both the Venom and Carnage symbiotes at the same time, resulting in this terrifying new look. The Life Story Suit debuts from the titular Life Story comic run, where Peter and Miles age in real time. When Miles arrives in the story, he and Peter head into space to fight Venom, and thus this suit was born.
